Nintendo’s E3 2019 Direct was full of major announcements for upcoming games like Link’s Awakening, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and the surprise reveal that a sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is currently in development. During the Direct, we were also treated to a story trailer for Fire Emblem: Three Houses, which is due to release on Nintendo Switch next month.
Co-developed by Intelligent Systems and Koei Tecmo Games, Fire Emblem: Three Houses is the latest installment in Nintendo’s tactical fantasy RPG series releasing exclusively on the Nintendo Switch. In Three Houses, players will take on the role of Byleth, a professor at the Officer’s Academy in Fodlan, “an elite facility that trains students in the ways of weapons, magic, and special skills.”
With the leaked Harry Potter RPG not making an appearance during the direct, Fire Emblem: Three Houses might just fill the gap as the game’s setting has often been compared to Hogwarts. Players will be able to choose the name and gender of the main protagonist and move freely throughout sections of the world, interacting with characters to build relationships and gather information.
The Officers Academy is home to three noble houses known as The Black Eagles, The Blue Lions, and The Golden Deer, and the player must choose one house to lead the students into battle. Three main characters – Edelgard, Dimitri, and Claude – will each have a prominent role in Fire Emblem: Three Houses story, as the heirs to each of the three houses.
Fire Emblem: Three Houses is due to release one week after another major first-party Nintendo title, Marvel’s Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order which received its own trailer during the Nintendo Direct. While the series has a hardcore fan base, it will be interesting to see how the latest entry in the turn-based fantasy series is received by the mainstream audience, especially releasing so close to the unstoppable juggernaut that is Marvel.
Fire Emblem: Three Houses is releasing on July 26, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
